Jonathan*-a 12 year old boy who can jump into a pool and swim its full length. This statement may not seem unusual or exceptional to everyone who hears it. Yet, this accomplishment is, for him, the few activities that he can participate in and be truly successful at. He is, however, non-verbal, globally developmentally delayed, autistic, struggles with speech apraxia, and mitochondrial disorder. He has been in The Kelskids Adapted Swim Program for several sessions. He began his first session with screams and anxiety. Through perseverance, patience, and encouragement from instructors, parents and other participants he can now be seen regularly jumping into the water with no inhibitions grinning from ear to ear as he swims with his family. He is now making progress on his backstroke and his social interactions with family members and close friends have also grown.***********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************Kayla*-a 9 year old girl who enjoys playing “ring around the roses”, doing the “hokey pokey” and jumping into the pool with her friends. These may all sound like typical things for a girl. However, she is not your typical little girl. She has Cerebral Palsy and is globally developmentally delayed, non verbal and non-ambulatory. The aquatic environment and socialization provided by the program enables her to accomplish tasks that the majority of us take for granted. Her family is grateful that her aquatic abilities has now provided an activity that they can all participate in and enjoy equally. *********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************Tome'*-a 6 year old boy who recently passed the swim test that all children are required to pass in order to use the water slides at his local pool. This involves swimming one length of the pool in any manner without floatation devices, assistance, or stopping at all. He has accomplished this by doing the backstroke. After almost 2 years in aquatic programming, he has learned to swim, and set achievable goals both in and out of the water. One of the goals that he set for himself is to walk independent of a walker. He walked into his kindergarten class on the first day aided by only one crutch. He now enjoys amazing his friends and family members by taking steps completely on his own.  *Names have been changed for privacy.
